The Bil Keane Memorial Collection

of Moribund Figures of Speech Used Today Only by Advertisers and Humorists with Small Imaginations

Our collection's specimens have been carefully gathered from television, newspaper ads and small theme restaurant menus, polished and restored by our resident linguistic cleaning experts to remove tarnish and superfluous "quotation marks".


A Whale of A...
  • deceased ca. 1940's; modern use exclusively limited to swimming pool, water park and fish sandwich sales.  Our museum's specimen is a rare misprint without the obligatory completion, "Sale" or "Good Time".  (Another common subvariant is the "Tale" ending, used exclusively in the "About Our History" segment of nautically-themed menus.)
Spring Into...
  • dec. ca. 1930's; used exclusively for mattress and Spring seasonal sales
Quite a Card 
  • dec. ca. 1950's; ressurrected by the invention of magnetic debit gift cards
To Get Fired Up About...
  • dec. ca. 1970's; used to sell grills, grilled foods, fireplaces and accessories
You'll Flip Over...
  • dec. ca. 1930's; used to sell pancakes, breakfast specials and anything in conjunction with clipart of acrobats
Right From the Horse's Mouth
  • dec. ca. 1930's; used exclusively in conjunction with talking horse mascots or horserace-themed clipart
To Rock Out, to Rock One's World
  • dec. ca. 1990's; used exclusively by advertisers who have not heard a rock song since 1964
